Introduction:

The new Face Mill – Zig, ZigZag operation introduces contemporary programming methods for dynamically adjusting toolpath parameters and enhances programming efficiency. Significant enhancements have been made to this new Face Milling operation that features the zig and zig-zag patterns that simplify the process of programming face milling toolpaths for users. Through an interactive on-screen user interface, individuals can seamlessly specify path parameters such as Cut Angle, Run Off, First Pass Overhang, Blank Thickness, Start Point, and Floor Stock. This interface offers automatic toolpath previews, facilitating quicker toolpath generation.

Interactive On-Screen UI:

Interactively adjust parameters by simply clicking and dragging to the desired angle, thickness, or length. Tool path preview enabled by automated toolpath generation will update dynamically.

How to Create a Face Mill Zig, ZigZag Operation:

 

  • Using Create Operations, create a Face Mill Zig, ZigZag operation with appropriate tool, geometry, etc.

  • Under “Main” Tab:
    • Specify the desired Cut Area, Floor Stock and Cut Angle.
    • Specify the containment method to be used. Note: this tied with the depth per cut determines the number of axial cut levels.
    • Select the Pattern and Containment Type, as well as specify the Tool Run Off and Overhand distances.
    • Specify the Radial Stepover and Axial Depth of Cut.

  •  Generate Tool Path
    • Note: Other non-cutting moves and cut direction strategies may need set to achieve desired tool path but were not necessary for this example.
